A supply line can fail while you’re at work, a dishwasher can leak behind the cabinets, or a storm can push water into a Westchase home. The first few decisions matter. Stop the source when it is safe, document what happened, and get help drying areas that you cannot see.
1. Make the area safe
If water is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, stay out of the affected area and contact a qualified electrician or the utility provider. Do not walk through standing water to switch off power. Keep children and pets away from wet rooms. If the water may contain sewage or other contaminants, avoid contact and call a restoration professional.
2. Stop the water and limit the spread
For a plumbing leak, close the fixture’s shutoff valve if you can reach it safely. If that does not stop the flow, use the home’s main water shutoff. Place a container under an active drip and move dry, portable items away from the wet area. A roof or window leak may need a qualified contractor to address the opening; do not climb onto a wet roof.
3. Photograph the damage before cleanup
Take wide photos of every affected room and close-ups of the water source, wet flooring, baseboards, cabinets, and damaged belongings. Note when you found the leak and what you did to stop it. Save receipts for emergency work and keep a list of affected items. Your insurer can explain its claim and documentation requirements.
4. Look beyond the visible puddle
Water can travel beneath flooring, into wall cavities, and behind kitchen cabinets. A surface that feels dry does not prove the material underneath is dry. Professional moisture readings help define the affected area and guide extraction, drying equipment, and follow-up checks. The plan depends on the water source, materials, and how long they have been wet.
5. Get a drying plan promptly
Remove small amounts of clean water only when the area is electrically safe. Avoid running fans across suspected sewage or contaminated water. Call for professional help when water has reached drywall, insulation, wood flooring, cabinets, multiple rooms, or a ceiling, or when you cannot tell how far it spread. Ask what will be removed, what can be dried in place, and how the crew will confirm drying progress.
